Woodcraft: Not Just For Decoration

Thursday - January 22, 2009
The Vespa scooter has a classically appreciable shape. Portuguese craftsman Carlos Alberto managed to fashion one from laminated hardwood. The result is stunningly beautiful. The little scooter is based on an original Vespa which had fallen into complete disrepair, but using long-tested woodcraft techniques a flowing new body was constructed for the runabout. The main spine of the bike is fashioned from steam bent and laminated veneers upon which very nicely carved body work hangs. Even the package tray and seat are made from wood. It’s more than likely this Vespa is now quite a few pounds heftier than when it started out, and the original was not known for its swiftness so despite it’s beauty it’s probably kind of a pig in the performance department. Then again, if something looks that good, we’ll give the zero to sixty times a pass.

2005 Piaggio Typhoon $2150

Tuesday - October 14, 2008

From the makers of Vepsa, this is the Piaggio Typhoon. With the same great performance as a Vespa and futuristic styling, this scooter runs and looks like a champ. The 2-stroke 49cc engine makes this scooter a real money saver. An upgraded performance exhaust and carb. means a speedy take off. These parts will have you running at the head of the pack instead of struggling to keep up with traffic. A 1.5 gallon gas tank and a whopping 100 estimated miles per gallon means you’ll be traveling 150 miles for about the same price as a large value meal. And with an electronic gas gauge, you don’t have to worry about how much gas you have left. The twist-n-go throttle makes this scooter great for everyone. With an automatic transmission, there are no gears to shift. You just sit, twist, and go. The massive under seat storage compartment is perfect for those quick store runs or carrying school supplies. Whether you’re looking for a new toy, or a cheap means of transportation, this scooter is for you.

The Piaggio MP3 500

Monday - September 8, 2008

Aggressive styling and performance, the Piaggio MP3 500 is the three-wheeler for people who want to stand out. Two front wheels and a all-new 492cc engine provide very racy performance while remaining exceptionally safe.

The front two wheels are marked by a steel tube bumper with metal mesh inserts that give the vehicle a rugged look. The design protects the rider while putting the unique front suspension on display. Other touches are the sleek ‘naked’ metal handlebar and black ten-spoke wheel rims. The five-lamp headlight unit is not only striking to look at but highly effective as well; the two biggest lamps are equipped with off-road-style shockproof covers.

The Piaggio MP3 500 streaks away from traffic lights and takes all kinds of terrain in its stride, handling twisty mountain roads and long rides in all safety whatever the weather conditions. Impeccable road holding in all conditions, with stability and braking power that no conventional scooter can provide.
