UPD to Focus on Helmet Enforcement for Motorcycles

University of Florida police will focus on helmet laws for motorcycle riders on campus with a special traffic detail Wednesday.

The goal of the detail is to increase awareness of the law to help make motorcycle riders safer on campus, according to the release.

Florida law requires motorcycle riders under the age of 21 to wear helmets and eye protection. Riders over 21 are required to wear eye protection. Operators of motor scooters of less than 50 cc’s are not covered by motorcycle helmet laws unless they can travel over 30 mph, according to a UPD news release.

The UPD traffic unit will run weekly saturation details throughout the spring semester focusing on a different traffic safety issues, according to the release. This is the second detail of the semester.
